“For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit.” Romans 8:5 ESV
Alas, a new year and the chance to refocus on everything. Having recently returned to life from my wonderful 8 weeks (dripping with sarcasm) of maternity leave, I’m feeling overwhelmed with everything I have going on. I have a head swimming in thoughts and ideas for the new year and it’s hard for me to quiet the noise of chaos. The one thing that really stands out to me is a conversation I had with Chris. He was standing across from me in the kitchen during Christmas telling me that I do nothing but add unneeded stress to myself. And that is something I confess to, a perfect holiday with a perfect homemade apple pie. It’s much to be desired but, maybe in the grand scheme of life with a baby, wasn’t the most practical choice. Scaling into what’s important during this season of a growing family is what this year should be all about. So I decided that my One Word for 2018 is going to be Focused.
When I was searching for my word, I had many great ideas: prayerful, respectful, abide. But nothing seemed to encompass all areas of my life.
The literal definition of focus: adapt to the prevailing level of light and become able to see clearly.
When you think about this definition in a spiritual context, what more powerful word could you apply to your life? I want to set my attention to those things that prevail light, goodness from God. I want to make them become a clearer part of my life, to leave behind the noise and distractions. To focus in on his will for my life and not things of this world.
So this year, my task is to focus in on what is important to me as a wife, mom, daughter, homemaker, employee that will better glorify the Kingdom of God. I have faith that in doing so, the storm will calm and leave behind a peace in His presence.
I hope you are all blessed with a Happy 2018! Have you picked a One Word this year?
